CNN Anchor Reveals His Sexual Orientation

Even though he acknowledges a fear of being shunned by revealing his sexual orientation in a new book, a CNN anchor has come out publicly that he is gay, reports Bill Carter in The New York Times.CNN weekend prime-time anchor Don Lemon writes about being gay in "Transparent," according to the story. Lemon had been open at work, with many of his CNN co-workers and managers aware of his sexual orientation, the story says. Going public with it, especially as a black man, carries risks, Lemon said in the piece.“It’s quite different for an African-American male,” he said. “It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture."He started writing the book after appearing on a panel called "The Black Man in the Age of Obama," although the book was not originally intended to focus on his coming out. When he started to write, he started to include details of his personal life, such as how he had been abused as a child and didn't know his father, the article says.CNN has assured him of its support and has booked him as a guest on "CNN Newsroom," the piece adds. He said that his coming out might stir up questions about whether any other TV news personalities might acknowledge being gay, the story says. "People have to do it at their own speed. I respect that," Lemon said.
